This table is a guide to the availability of Hammer films and TV series on DVD. Not only does it provide a useful checklist to a film's availability, it also compares features if there's more than one version available, and notes if there are significant differences between different versions. Where no disc is available, some indication as to who might hold the rights may be offered, which may give an indication whether or not a future release is likely. Where a film is not available on DVD, VHS or laserdisc availability is indicated.

Comments, corrections and additions are most welcome.  You can email information to me directly, using the button, left, or contribute it to this thread at Roobarb's DVD Forum. Further research is recommended before purchasing decisions are made.  The latest updates are in yellow.

1957

The Abominable Snowman (of the Himalayas)

UK - DD Video

DD Video's disc features a commentary track, by director Val Guest and writer Nigel Kneale, and an exclusive thirteen minute video interview with Guest. Also includes the lightweight World of Hammer documentary Peter Cushing, in its original 4:3 format. The disc comes with a 24-page booklet, featuring rare stills and production notes.  The first pressing of DD Video's disc presented the film in anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen format, but lacked the data flag that automatically switches 16:9 screens to anamorphic mode. DD Video will exchange copies of the old version. The corrected version should be available in stores now. No subtitles / captions. Coded for Regions 1-6.  Zeta Minor Review

US - Anchor Bay Entertainment

The US disc features a commentary track, by director Val Guest and writer Nigel Kneale, the theatrical trailer and the World of Hammer documentary Peter Cushing. The latter is presented in 4:3 format, pillarboxed within a 16:9 frame - a misguided idea which maintains a consistent presentation across the disc, at the expense of keeping it in its original format. The disc - like the UK release - features the original UK theatrical version, which is about six minutes longer than the US theatrical version. Anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer. No subtitles / captions. Zeta Minor Review

The film was re-released by Anchor Bay at the end of 2003 as a double-bill with Shatter. The two-disc set contains all the bonus features of the original discs. Anchor Bay's rights have expired, and both the standalone disc and the double-bill version have been deleted.

Available as Yeti der Schneemensch. 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer, English and German audio tracks. Bonus features include commentary track by Kneale and Guest, and trailer. (Bonus features may not have English audio).

UK - Warner Home Video

1.78:1 anamorphic transfer. Was available as a standalone disc, or as part of the Hammer Horror Originals DVD set, which also included Dracula and The Mummy. Both the individual disc and the box set now seem to be deleted. Features a theatrical trailer.

US - Warner Home Video - 83'05"

Available on DVD. This disc is reviewed in Video Watchdog 94:34.

Previously available on laserdisc, from Warner Home Video (83'8") - this tape was reviewed in Video Watchdog issue 51:4.

Australia - Warner Home Video

Available as part of the Hammer Horror Originals DVD set, which also includes Dracula and The Mummy. Also available as a Horror Double Feature disc coupled with Taste The Blood of Dracula.

France - Warner Home Video

Available as Frankenstein s'est echappé. Probably identical to the UK disc.

All these Warner Home Video versions are probably identical. This version is missing a brief 2" interstitial shot of the Baron examining an eyeball, part of a dissolve between shots, as Frankenstein pours money onto the counter of the morgue. There seem to be two legitimate versions of the film: one with this shot, and another without. The former was shown by the BBC several times during the 90s. The latter, which extends the following shot by slowing it down (thus maintaining the integrity of the soundtrack and identical duration), is the version Warner Home Video has used for the DVD. Information courtesy of Video Watchdog correspondent Dan Gale, Video Watchdog 93:79.

Japan - Warner Home Video

Previously available on laserdisc. Reviewed in Video Watchdog 21:69.

James Bernard's music for the film is available on The Hammer Frankenstein Film Music Collection CD (GDI Records, GDICD011). The theme is also on The Hammer Film Music Collection - Volume One (GDI Records, GDICD002).

Quatermass 2  [US:  Enemy From Space]

UK - DD Video

Full-frame transfer. Features Enemy from Space trailer, commentary track by writer Nigel Kneale and director / co-writer Val Guest and exclusive eight-minute video interview with Val Guest. Comes with 24-page booklet. Unimpressive transfer, but marginally better than the Anchor Bay disc. No subtitles / captions.  Zeta Minor review

US - Anchor Bay  Entertainment

Full-frame transfer. Available as Quatermass 2. Features the Enemy from Space trailer and the commentary track by Kneale and Guest. Also contains the World of Hammer documentary Sci-Fi (also on the US Quatermass and the Pit disc and both the UK and US X - The Unknown discs). No subtitles / captions. Zeta Minor review

The film was re-released by Anchor Bay at the end of 2003 as a double-bill with Quatermass and the Pit. The two-disc set contains all the bonus features of the original discs. Anchor Bay's rights have expired, and both the standalone disc and the double-bill version have been deleted.

UK - Warner Home Video

Was available as a individual disc, or as part of the Hammer Horror Originals box set. The box says Dracula, although it's on-screen title is Horror of Dracula. 1.78:1 anamorphic transfer.
