The Region 1 version

PSYCHO  [1960]

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Starring: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles

PSYCHO [1998]

Director: Gus Van Sant

Starring: Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Julianne Moore

Universal released both versions of Psycho at the same time in the UK, making comparisons between the two discs inevitable, even though they aim to serve almost completely different audiences. The 1998 version of Psycho comes with a bunch of worthwhile extras: Van Sant talks extensively about his motivations for re-making the film on the remake’s commentary track, which he shares with stars Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn. There’s more analysis in Psycho Path, a frank thirty-minute “making of” documentary. The film is presented in 1.85:1 ratio, with 16:9 enhancement, and has a thrilling 5.1 sound mix.

Sadly British buyers will discover that Universal hasn’t treated Hitchcock’s classic film with similar respect. The Region 1 disc is a proper “Collector’s Edition”, with a terrific 100m documentary, trailers, storyboards and newsreel footage, all missing from the UK version. Both the Region 1 and Region 2 discs contain a remastered version of the movie in 1.85:1 ratio, with mono digital sound, but the UK Region 2 version also benefits from 16:9 enhancement.
