OUT OF THE UNKNOWN

SEASON 1 CLIPS GUIDE

by Colin Cutler

Despite the routine destruction that was the fate of many videotaped productions and telerecordings of this era, the first season of Out of the Unknown has fared remarkably well, with the fortuitous retention of eleven 16mm telerecordings made for the purposes of overseas sales.

This currently leaves only two productions missing in their entirety: The Fox and the Forest and Andover and the Android, the latter remaining one of Irene Shubik’s personal favourites from her two year tenure as producer on the series.

Fleeing Time Travellers Sarah (Liane Aukin) and David (Frederick Bartman)

THE FOX AND THE FOREST

TX. 22nd November 1965

End Credit Sequence (b/w 16mm film)

The closing credits for the first two b/w seasons were played over a specially created montage sequence designed by Bernard Lodge, showing representative images from each play (e.g. close-ups of the main protagonists).

The closing credits for The Fox and the Forest (alongside material from Andover and the Android – see entry below) had been retained on a 1965 BBC Graphics Department showreel, recovered by BBC engineer Steve Roberts in the late nineties. This reel also contained the opening title sequence for Out of the Unknown, alongside the specially designed titles for Harold Pinter's play The Tea Party.
